In emerging democracies throughout the world, government at the local level has often proven to be the primary agent of change. Effective citizen participation, cooperation between elected officials and civil society, and better access to public services are often achieved in smaller towns and villages.
The Ash Institute will offer one to two fellowships in the offices of the most innovative mayors in Latin America. The program is developed in collaboration with the HKS student sponsored Latin American Mayors Conference and with the International Liaison Group for Innovations in Governance and Public Action, of which the Ash Institute is a member. Ten different centers around the world, including Peru, Chile, and Brazil, recognize innovations that significantly reduce social, economic, political, gender, and ethnic inequalities. HKS students will have an opportunity to share analytical methods and innovative public practices while learning how to translate public policy into public action in highly challenging contexts.
