Michael Lipsky


Senior Program Director, Demos


Michael Lipsky serves on the faculty of Georgetown University Public Policy Institute. He is also a Senior Program Director at Demos, a non-partisan public policy organization working to improve democracy and to foster greater economic opportunity and less disparity. Previously, Dr. Lipsky served as Senior Program Officer with the Peace and Social Justice Program of the Ford Foundation in New York City . Among the initiatives he was affiliated with between 1991 and 2003 were: the Innovations in American Government, an awards program, administered by the Kennedy School of Government at Harvard University; Accelerating Improvement in Local Government Internationally, in which six foreign countries replicated the American Innovations Program; the State Fiscal Analysis Initiative, a network of 30 state-based organizations and Leadership for a Changing World, which recognizes and celebrates the contributions of community leaders throughout the United States.

Before joining the Ford Foundation, Dr. Lipsky was a Professor of Political Science at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. He has also taught at the University of Wisconsin , Harvard University , and the University of Washington . In addition, he is the author of numerous articles and books. His Street Level Bureaucracy (1980) received the 1999 Aaron E. Wildavsky Enduring Contribution Award of the Public Policy Section of the American Political Science Association for a book or article published between ten and twenty years ago that continues to influence the field of public policy.
