Asia Fellows Overview

Asia Fellows

Fellows can pursue an independent research project for either one semester or full academic year at the Ash Institute's Asia Programs.

Under the direction of Director Anthony Saich, Asia Programs spans greater China, Japan and Vietnam and focuses on training of civil servants, applied policy research, strategic dialogue workshops, and institutional capacity building within Asia.

About the Program: The fellows program allows individuals the freedom to design their time to pursue independent research projects, with the help of Asia Programs, Harvard Kennedy School, and other Harvard resources. With instructor approval, fellows may audit classes at any of the Harvard schools. Fellows will receive a certificate upon completion, but no degrees will be conferred. Appointments run from September 1 to January 15 and then from February 1 to June 15. If needed, and on a space-available basis, fellows can receive cubicle space, use of a dedicated computer and telephone in addition to access to libraries and other resources. Those fellows assigned to a cubicle space are expected to reside in the Boston area and to have their primary office at Asia Programs so they can participate fully in the life of the community. Those who do not need their own office space can apply for the limited number of non-residential positions available.

Criteria and Expectations: Fellows must be fluent in both written and spoken English. All fellows will be expected to participate in research seminars and produce at least a ten-page written paper summarizing their research. Fellows are drawn from the government, business, and academic communities and are expected to be able to do independent research. Asia Programs does not offer any financial support for individuals’ expenses, such as living costs, insurance, or Program affiliation and residency fees.

Application and Deadlines: Candidates may apply at two times during the year for an Asia Programs fellowship. Fax your completed application to the attention of Bruce Jackan at (617) 495-4948. Emailed applications will not be accepted.
